Higgins cruises to victory over Schratz; Slaughter beats Assini

U.S. Rep Brian Higgins won a decisive re-election to New York's 27th Congressional District over Shelly Schratz, taking 74.4 percent of the vote in the two-county race.

Higgins, a Buffalo Democrat, won 75.2 percent in Erie County and 66.7 percent in Niagara County.

The Niagara County portion of the district is significantly smaller with only 26,000 votes cast overall. Approximately 10 times as many people voted in the Erie County portion of the safe Democrat district.
In the 25th Congressional District, incumbent Democrat Louise Slaughter won out over Mark Assini by a 55.7-44.3 percent margin. Assini had come within 1,000 votes of Slaughter two years ago. This time around, the margin was nearly 35,000.

The 25th District is entirely in Monroe County. Slaughter had previously served in one of the most oddly shaped Congressional Districts in the county, affectionately referred to as "the headphone district" or "the earmuffs." It ran from Rochester to Buffalo, cutting a very narrow path along Lake Ontario from one to the other. It was done away with in 2013.
