BUFFALO HEALTHY LIVING
The Ovarian Cancer Project, founded in 2012 is Western New York's most trusted resource for women with ovarian cancer. The organization provides professionally facilitated support groups, mentoring, resources and information for women with ovarian cancer as well as their families. All proceeds of the sale directly support these specific programs, including the organization's signature "Comfort & Hope" tote given to newly diagnosed women, which is filled with the necessities for chemotherapy, and most importantly a message of hope from fellow ovarian cancer survivors. Sale proceeds also contribute to keeping programs free of charge for current patients and survivors so that support is accessible to all women.
Freeberg, who lives in Tonawanda, was diagnosed 21 years ago at Stage 4 and was "overwhelmed by the care, concern and compassion" she felt at that first meeting. Now, she says, "I know how she got through the earlier years with the disease without the Ovarian Cancer Project's support." These women along with dozens of others have benefited from not only the emotional and psychological support that is offered, but also understand the importance of learning about their disease and how to navigate treatments, clinical trials and services available to them.
Kathleen Maxian, the Founder and President of the organization, and a survivor herself works help women understand all aspects of their disease so that they able to learn to advocate for themselves and their health. Maxian states, "Studies show that women with ovarian cancer, who attend support groups and are educated about their disease have better survival," adding, "There is a real loss of control with a cancer diagnosis of this type, the women become patients – with routines focused on scheduled appointments, surgeries and chemotherapies. With our help and encouragement whether in our Support Group setting, in our Mentoring Program or One-On-One, we focus on things they can do to begin taking back control of their lives, our services are about as patient focused as you can get."
