Canisius men's lacrosse faces Detroit in key MAAC matchup

BUFFALO – Canisius travels to Detroit Saturday to take on Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference opponent Detroit in a Noon contest at Titan Field.

The Griffs (4-5, 2-0 MAAC) and the Titans (5-6, 3-0 MAAC) are part of a three-way tie with Monmouth for first place in the league standings.

Canisius makes its way to the Motor City for Saturday’s contest against Detroit eyeing its first 3-0 start to league play since the 2008 campaign, when it opened the league portion of its schedule with wins in each of its first six conference contests. Junior Connor Kearnan continues to pace the Griffs attack, leading the squad in goals (22), assists (17) and points (39). Kearnan ranks in the top 30 nationally in points (15th), goals (28th) and assists (24th). Junior Ryan McKee is second on the team in goals with 16. McKee, who recorded a hat trick in Canisius’ 11-7 setback to Binghamton on March 28, has recorded three or more goals in a game four times this season. Senior Jeff Edwards is second on the team in both assists (16) and points (23). Edwards, who has 114 career points to his credit, needs just one point to move into 14th place on the program’s all-time scoring list. Junior Liam Ganzhorn has started all nine games in goal for the Griffs. He ranks fourth in the MAAC in goals against average (11.43) and sixth in the league in save percentage (.468). It has been a tale of two offenses for Canisius this season as the Griffs have averaged 14.8 goals per game in their four wins and just 7.8 goals per game in their five losses. Their opponents, meanwhile, are averaging 15.2 goals per game in their five wins and just 7.8 goals per game in their four losses.

Canisius men’s lacrosse and DICK’S Sporting Goods will be hosting a free instructional clinic following the Griffs’ game against Siena on April 15. The one-hour skills clinic, running from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m., will include instruction from Canisius and Canadian National Team Head Coach Randy Mearns, along with selected Griffs players. Capped at 100 participants, the players must currently be enrolled in grades one through eight, and not play on a team with the Class of 2020 or older, due to NCAA compliance. All players who sign up will receive a free ticket to the game against Siena, beginning at 3 p.m., as well as a special gift from DICK’S Sporting Goods. For more information, contact the Canisius Ticket Sales & Service Manager, Joe LaVare, at lavarej@canisius.edu or by calling 716-888-8286.

Canisius returns to the Demske Sports Complex April 15 when it hosts MAAC foe Siena in a 3 p.m. contest. The game serves as the second half of a men’s and women’s doubleheader, with the women’s team hosting Quinnipiac in a Noon tilt. The game will be shown live on Spectrum Sports (formally TWCSN).
