NU baseball to host St. Bonaventure


NIAGARA UNIV. -- The Purple Eagles host Little 3 rival St. Bonaventure for a non-conference matchup on Tuesday. The teams will play a doubleheader and first pitch is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.

The Purple Eagles swept a three-game series with the Quinnipiac Bobcats April 9-10. NU won game one, 10-2, earned a 2-1 walk-off win in game two and picked up a 17-8 victory in game three. Greg Cullen led Niagara with six RBI and seven hits. Tanner Kirwer batted a team-best .545, going 6-for-11 at the plate. He also had a team-high two stolen bases. Daniel Procopio (4-2) pitched a complete game for the Purple Eagles in game two, striking out 11 batters in 7.0 innings pitched.

The Purple Eagles and the Bonnies met for a single game at St. Bonaventure on Wednesday. The Bonnies defeated Niagara, 7-2. Trevor McCauley led Niagara with one RBI and one double and McCauley and Cullen each had a team-best two hits. On the mound, Nate Mascellino (1-2) struck out two batters and allowed two runs in 4.0 innings pitched.

Sophomore shortstop Cullen leads Niagara at the plate. He is batting a team-best .377 and has a team-high 40 hits. He also leads the team in RBI with 25. Junior outfielder Kirwer leads NU with 17 doubles, 17 stolen bases and 29 runs scored. Kirwer is second on the team in hits with 37 and freshman first baseman Battaglia is second on the team in RBI with 24. Freshman Matthew Brash (5-0) leads the Niagara pitching staff with 42.0 innings pitched. He has struck out 38 batters and has an ERA of 2.57. Procopio (4-2), a senior, has thrown a team-high 48 strikeouts. He has an ERA of 2.92.

Junior shortstop Cole Peterson leads the Bonnies with 35 hits, 26 runs scored and 10 doubles. He is batting a team-best .350. David Vaccaro, a junior outfielder, leads the team in RBI with 21 and in homeruns with three. Junior pitcher Aaron Phillips (5-0) has pitched a team-high 48.2 innings and leads the Bonnies pitching staff in strikeouts with 39. Phillips has an ERA of 3.14.

Niagara heads to Lawrenceville, N.J. for a three-game series with the Rider Broncs Friday and Saturday.
