NEW YORK—Attorney General Eric T. Schneiderman issued the following statement today in observance of the Passover holiday:

"I wish all those celebrating in New York and across the world a happy, safe, and meaningful Passover.

"Each Passover, Jews are reminded that we have been forced to flee oppression throughout our history, and wander in strange lands in search of safety and freedom. We are commanded not only to remember our story, but to imagine that we ourselves were enslaved in Egypt, and then freed – so that we may empathize with the plight of those who are fleeing oppression and danger today. We are instructed in the Passover story: 'You shall not oppress the stranger; you know the heart of the stranger, for you were strangers in the land of Egypt.'

"According to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees there are now more than 65 million refugees worldwide—the most in modern history. Passover serves as a timely reminder of our obligation to welcome those fleeing oppression, and to fight all forms of discrimination and subjugation in our own time.

"Chag Sameach."
