UB softball drops pitcher’s duel to Kent State

BUFFALO -- The University at Buffalo softball team and Kent State engaged in a pitcher's duel on Friday afternoon as Buffalo starter Ally Power and Kent State starter Ronnie Ladines combined to allow just four hits and record 22 strikeouts, but the Bulls fell to the Golden Flashes, 1-0.

Ladines struck out a career-high 15 UB batters as she allowed just one base runner, a leadoff single by freshman Karlie Fernandez in the third inning.

Power was impressive too, as she struck out seven batters and scattered three hits, but two of those were to senior Maddy Grimm, including a long solo home run over the left field fence in the sixth inning for the only run of the game. Ladines retired the final 15 Buffalo batters.

"Ally Power had a phenomenal pitching performance today," said head coach Trena Peel. "It is unfortunate that we got beat by a solo home run.  Tomorrow we have to increase our quality at bats and drive good pitches."

The two teams will continue their series with a doubleheader at 1 p.m. Saturday.
