UB women's rowing makes strides at George Mason Invitational


FAIRFAX, Va. – A shorthanded University at Buffalo women's rowing team competed at the George Mason Invitational and after some morning struggles, rebounded nicely in the afternoon.

"Today was a tough one," head coach Kerri Brace said. "We had three key members out with injury this week, and it was clear we used the first race to shake off the cobwebs and get into racing. We made some good mental adjustments after the morning session and were able to head into the afternoon set with a clear focus of what we wanted to accomplish. We're leaving here with good momentum heading back to Tonawanda Creek on Tuesday."

UB's Varsity 4 boat was the squad's top finisher with a second place finish in the B Final. The Bulls finished with a time of 8:03.6, 35 seconds ahead of Dayton which finished third with a time of 8:38.8. The Varsity 4 boat was made up of Marissa Scaduto, Maria Chinnici, Veronica Trzeciak, Rylee James and Mackenzie Junjulas.

The 2nd Varsity 8 boat also advanced to the B final and finished third with a time of 8:28.3. The 2nd Varsity 8 boat consisted of Dana Cowley, Alexa Hillis, Victoria Nehls, Rebecca Rozeski and Dowlette Alam El Din.

UB's 2nd Varsity 8 boat nearly won the C Final, finishing second with a time of 7:02.1. Old Dominion won the race with a time of 7:01.8. The 2nd Varsity 8 boat was made up of Caeleigh Heavey, Maddie Sheffield, Bella Goldberg, Emma Napper, Sydney Jones, Natalie Howk, Stephanie Busha, Dania Abul-Enin and Ankita Kelkar.

Finally, Buffalo's Varsity 8 boat finished third in the C Final with a time of 6:47.6. The Bulls were edge out by George Mason which finished with a time of 6:47.4. The Varsity 8 boat was made up of Ally Mayo, Elle Good, Abbie Albright, Maddy Saporito, Jillian Michael, Sarah Brill, Paige Krohn and Hayley Nieves.

Buffalo will next compete at the Eastern Sprints in Worcester, MA next Sunday.
