Fatal collision leads to manslaughter charges

SCIO -- A 43-year-old Scio man was charged early this morning with manslaughter and DWI following a collision on County Route 18.

According to New York State Police, Troopers responded to County Route 18 for a pedestrian struck by a vehicle. They determined that Todd V. Gardner had been traveling north on County Route 18 in a 1991 Chevrolet Camaro and struck Douglas R. Brauen, 37 of Wellsville. Brauen sustained injuries, but was alert and responsive. Further investigation revealed that Gardner was under the influence and placed under arrest. He was taken to SP Amity and submitted to a breath test resulting in a .11 percent BAC.

Brauen was transported to Jones Memorial Hospital to be treated for possible leg fractures.  During treatment Brauen went into cardiac arrest and died.

Gardner was remanded to Allegany County Jail on $5,000 bail.
