IronPigs defeat Wings, 4-1


The Lehigh Valley IronPigs topped the Red Wings 4-1 Tuesday night in Pennsylvania. Hot-hitting Bengie Gonzalez had a pair of singles for the Wings.

Kyle Gibson made his first start since being optioned to the Red Wings from Minnesota on Friday. The IronPigs used a pair of singles and two run-scoring groundouts to take a 2-0 first inning lead.

In the top of the third inning against IronPigs starter Ben Lively, the Wings got back-to-back hits from Ben Paulsen and Gonzalez. Paulsen scored on a double play to bring the Wings to within a run at 2-1.

Gibson allowed just a single over the next three innings, recording five strikeouts. In the bottom of the fifth inning, the IronPigs loaded the bases with none out but settled for just one run and a 3-1 lead.

Over six innings, Gibson allowed six hits and three earned runs with a walk and eight strikeouts. Gibson threw 94 pitches, 57 for strikes. Buddy Boshers took over for Gibson in the bottom of the seventh. The IronPigs picked up a run against Boshers with two outs in the seventh, increasing their lead to 4-1.

Lively exited with one out in the eighth, having allowed six hits, an earned run, and a walk while striking out four. He threw 80 pitches, 56 for strikes.

D.J. Baxendale set down both batters he faced in the eighth inning.

Gonzalez has now hit in seven of his last nine games, batting .423 (11-for 26) with two triples, four walks, four RBI and two runs scored since April 22.

Lehigh Valley out-hit the Red Wings 9-6.

Shuck was replaced in the lineup by Leonardo Reginatto...1B ByungHo Park was reinstated from the disabled list Tuesday, and OF Quintin Berry was released. Park appeared in and had a hit in each of the first four games of the season, before straining his right hamstring on a double in the 9th inning on April 10 vs. Buffalo...The Phillies have acquired former Red Wings RHP Casey Fien from the Mariners in exchange for cash considerations. Fien will be assigned to Lehigh Valley...Former Wings SS Pedro Florimon was in the IronPigs lineup at second base Tuesday.
