Knights rally from down six to defeat Bisons 8-7


In another high scoring affair with Charlotte, the Bisons lost their first game of the series, 8-7, on Sunday night at BB&T Ballpark when the Knights went on a run in the middle innings.

After giving up the first six runs of the night to the Herd, Charlotte went on a rally of their own to not only tie the game, but to win it altogether. To get on the board, Charlotte's Jason Bourgeois sent a sacrifice fly to center field to score Danny Hayes in the fifth inning. Standing on second base after doubling earlier in the inning, Rhymer Liriano reached home when Jose Vinicio grounded to center field. To round the frame out, Cody Asche singled to left field to bring Liriano home and trim the Knights deficit to a 6-3 margin.

The second installment of Charlotte's comeback came in the seventh inning, starting with a two-run homer from Nicky Delmonico that brought home Vinicio from first base. Carson Blair batted in the tying run with a double toward center field, plating Yoan Moncada. Hayes had the game-winning hit when he sent Blair home after batting a line drive to right field, giving the Knights their first and the final lead of the night at 8-7.

The Herd got on the board Jake Elmore was hit by a pitch and Dwight Smith Jr. walked to first base in the first inning. Mike Ohlman doubled into a gap in center field to bring Elmore and Smith Jr. to home plate and gave the Bisons a 2-0 lead.

Jason Leblebijian helped stretch the lead in the next couple of innings. Ian Parmley, who reached first base off of a bunt towards third, made his way home when Leblebijian doubled to left field. Giving the Herd a 5-0 advantage an inning later, Leblebijian grounded a ball to right field to score Rowdy Tellez from third.

Buffalo had two more runs come in the fourth and sixth innings. Tellez hit a sac fly in the fourth to score Roemon Fields and Ian Parmley doubled to right field to score Ohlman from second base.

Making an MLB rehab start with the Herd, Francisco Liriano gave 4.1 innings of work on the night. He gave up Charlotte's first three runs and delivered seven strikeouts before retiring from the mound. Wil Browning pitched the next two innings in relief, allowing four runs in the process.

Chad Girodo and Leonel Campos closed out the game for the final 1.2 innings. Girodo gave up a run and two hits and Campos let just one runner get on base.

Buffalo will play one more game to round out their series with the Knights on Monday with first pitch scheduled for 2:05 p.m. Lefty T.J. House is projected to be on the mound.

BISONS NOTES: The Bisons have scored an average of 9.6 runs per game in this series with Charlotte…In contrast, Buffalo has also given up an average of six runs in this series as well…The Bisons are now 8-19 whenever they don't hit a home run and are 1-18 when trailing after the seventh inning.
