Niagara County Department of Health offer free diabetes prevention workshops

NIAGARA FALLS -- The Niagara County Department of Health Nursing Division in collaboration with the Niagara County Office for the Aging is offering a free Diabetes Prevention Program starting on July 12 at the Community Health Center of Niagara Falls from 1:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m.

This is a 16-week program for people who are at risk for developing Type 2 diabetes. Classes are scheduled in 16 consecutive weekly sessions, then once a month for 6 – 8 months. Program participants will learn the skills they need to make lasting changes in health behaviors such as losing a modest amount of weight, being more physically active and managing stress.

People with pre-diabetes, (those with a higher than normal fasting blood glucose (sugar), of 100-125 mg/dl) are 5 – 15 times more likely to develop Type 2 diabetes than those with normal blood glucose levels. Many people with pre-diabetes will develop Type 2 diabetes within 3 years if they do not take steps to prevent it. This program offers a proven approach to preventing or delaying the onset of Type 2 diabetes through modest lifestyle changes.

If your doctor has told you that you are pre-diabetic, or you have one or more of the following risk factors for Type 2 diabetes, call the Niagara County Department of Health Nursing Division at (716) 278-1900 to register for a workshop. Risk factors for diabetes include ahistory of one or more of the following:

  • Gestational diabetes
  • Giving birth to an infant weighing 9 pounds or greater
  • Being overweight with a body mass index of 24 or greater
  • Family member with diabetes

If your group or organization is interested in scheduling a free Diabetes Prevention Program, a Diabetes Self-Management Workshop or a Chronic Disease Self-Management Workshop, call the Niagara County Department of Health Nursing Division at (716) 278-1900.
