NU baseball resumes non-conference play at Lafayette

NIAGARA UNIV. -- The Purple Eagles baseball team resumes non-conference play with a three-game series at Lafayette May 6-7.

  • The Purple Eagles won two games in a three-game series with the Fairfield Stags, the defending MAAC champions, April 28-29.
  • Niagara won game one, 6-5, in extra innings and game two, 11-7, before falling to the Stags, 4-1, in the final game of the series.

On the Field: Niagara Purple Eagles (20-18, 10-8 MAAC))
  • Sophomore shortstop Greg Cullen leads the Purple Eagles at the plate with 55 hits and a .377 batting average. He also has 28 RBI and 23 runs scored.
  • Tanner Kirwer, a junior outfielder, leads the team with 37 runs scored, 19 doubles and 17 stolen bases. Kirwer is second in hits with 50.
  • Freshman first baseman Peter Battaglia leads Niagara in RBI with 38. Battaglia and senior catcher Joel Brophy lead the team in homeruns with three each.
  • On the mound, redshirt-junior Cody Eckerson (4-2) leads the pitching staff with a 1.76 ERA. He has fanned 38 batters in 41.0 innings pitched.
  • Senior Daniel Procopio (6-2) leads the Purple Eagles in strikeouts with 66 and freshman Matthew Brash (5-0) leads NU in innings pitched with 61.0.

On the Field: Lafayette Leopards (7-43, 4-16 Patriot League)
  • Junior infielder Steven Cohen leads the Leopards with 56 hits and 34 runs scored. He is batting .333.
  • Sophomore catcher John Selsor leads the team in RBI with 33 and in doubles with 17. Quentin Bubb, a junior outfielder, has a team-high 12 stolen bases.
  • Senior Trevor Houck (2-7) leads Lafayette on the mound. He has struck out 38 batters in 63.0 innings pitched. He has thrown four complete games and has an ERA of 5.00.
