Canisius' Lumley selected in Major League Baseball draft

Canisius baseball standout, Jake Lumley saw a dream realized on Wendesday afternoon as the Oakland Athletics selected him with the 981st pick in the Major League Baseball draft. Lumley is now the 13th player in Canisius baseball history to be selected in the draft.

The 2016 MAAC Player of the Year and an All-MAAC First-Team selection, Lumley posted league-leading numbers, finishing his senior campaign with a .355 batting average, 81 hits, 12 doubles, three triples and 21 RBI. The Windsor, Ontario native, became the program's leader in career hits, as he finishes his Golden Griffin tenure with 259 knocks.

Lumley's MAAC Player of the Year award was the first time he had earned a major conference award, and the second time in his career he'd been named to an All-MAAC team, earning second-team accolades in 2016 and first-team honors this past season.

Lumley becomes the third player to be drafted by Oakland, joining former Griffs Brett Siddall, who was drafted in the 13th round in 2015 and Sean Jamieson, who was taken in the 17th round of the 2011. Siddall is currently playing for the Advanced Single A, Stockton Ports.

Lumley becomes the 13th player in program history to be selected in the Major League Baseball Draft and the first player since the 2015 season when three Griffs were taken.

That year Connor Panas and Devon Stewart both went in the 9th round by the Toronto Blue Jays and Cleveland Indians, respectively, while Siddall was taken in the 13th. It was the just the second time in MAAC history where a program had three players drafted in the top-15 rounds of the Major League Baseball Draft.

The last team to do it was Niagara in 2005, when James Avery (5th round), Dan Griffin (5th round) and Reed Eastley (13th round) were all taken. Those three players all played under current Griffs head coach Mike McRae when he served as the head coach of the Niagara program.
