Hurlbut, Granite help Wings snap 3-game skid

Zack Granite reached base and scored in each of his first three plate appearances and David Hurlbut allowed two runs over 6.0 innings as the Rochester Red Wings snapped a three-game losing streak with a 6-2 win over the Norfolk Tides Friday night at Harbor Park.

Granite gave the Red Wings (24-25) an early advantage after leading off the game with a triple against Tides (22-32) Jordan Kipper (2-1). Granite scored one batter later on a Mitch Garver sacrifice fly.

Norfolk responded against Hurlbut (3-3) as David Washington's two-out, two-run double gave the Tides a 2-1 lead.

Rochester regained the lead with four runs in the 3rd to make it 5-2. The Wings used five singles, three never left the infield, highlighted by Matt Hague and Niko Goodrum each driving in a pair of runs.

Granite doubled and scored in the 4th to extend the lead to 6-2. Kipper was pulled after surrendering six runs on seven hits and two walks with four strikeouts over 3.1 innings.

Hurlbut (3-3) settled in after a rough 1st, retiring 14 of the final 15 batters he faced. He allowed six hits, four of which were doubles, and did not issue a walk while striking out two. Drew Rucinski (2 IP) and Michael Tonkin (1 IP) fired scoreless relief to secure the victory.

Hague reached base four times, finishing 2-for-3 with a walk, a hit-by-pitch, two RBI and a run scored. Granite and Tommy Field each went 2-for-4.
