RailRiders defeat Wings in series opener

The Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders beat the Rochester Red Wings 6-3 Monday night at Frontier Field. The series continues Tuesday night, another Fan 4-Pack night.

The Red Wings took an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first. Zack Granite helped to manufacture a run by leading off with a single off Scranton starter Bryan Mitchell, followed by his team-leading eighth stolen base. Granite eventually scored on a sac-fly from Tommy Field.

Granite produced another run in the bottom of third by scoring off a wild pitch by RailRiders pitcher Domingo German to make the score 2-0 Wings.

In limited action, Mitchell pitched 2.1 innings giving up two runs and three hits with a strikeout. He threw 44 pitches (29 strikes).

Wings starting pitcher Yohan Pino only allowed one hit through the first five innings. It wasn't until the sixth inning that Pino ran into trouble. A single by Tyler Wade and walk to Dustin Fowler led to a Gleyber Torres three-run home run which gave the RailRiders a 3-2 lead.

Pino went 5.1 innings allowing three runs, three hits and two walks. He struck out seven batters while throwing 95 pitches (65 strikes). D.J. Baxendale entered the game in relief of Pino and got out of trouble by inducing an inning-ending double play.

The RailRiders scored three more runs in the seventh inning to make it 6-2. The inning was highlighted by Torres' RBI single.

In the seventh inning, Engelb Vielma scored on a J.B. Shuck RBI single to cut the RailRiders lead to 6-3.

German looked impressive in relief for the RailRiders. He pitched 5.2 innings giving up just one unearned run, four hits, and two walks with seven strikeouts.

Baxendale pitched 2.2 innings giving up three unearned runs. Alan Busenitz set down all three batters he faced in the ninth inning.

Both teams had seven hits. The Wings committed two errors, compared to one by Scranton.
