UB soccer falls to Bowling Green in MAC Quarterfinals, 3-1

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – The University at Buffalo women's soccer team (7-9-3, 5-4-2 MAC) saw their season come to an end on Sunday afternoon in the MAC Quarterfinals against #4 Bowling Green as they were handed the 3-1 loss. Buffalo allowed three second half goals in the loss.

How It Happened
  • Bowling Green had the first shot of the match in the third minute as Skylar Fleak headed a cross towards the UB net that went just over the cross bar.
  • In the sixth minute, Julia Benati made a nice turn and fired a shot that was saved by the BG keeper to her left.
  • The Falcons had a pair of shots in the ninth minute but both attempts went wide of the Buffalo net.
  • After some back-and-forth play, Marcy Barberic sent a corner kick into the box and Meghan Simmons got a head on the shot but it went wide.
  • Buffalo finally broke through with the first goal of the match in the 37th minute off of a set piece. Julia Benati sent the corner kick into the box where Kaitlyn Walsh put a shot towards the goal that was blocked, before Carissima Cutronacollected the ball and netted her team-leading seventh goal of the season.
  • Buffalo had the final shot of the first half in the 44th minute as Julia Benati saw her shot stopped by the BG keeper.
  • After Gianna Yurchak saw her shot saved, the Falcons were able to counter and net the game-tying goal in the 56th minute. Erica Hubert was able to notch her ninth goal of the season.
  • Bowling Green didn't waste any time taking the 2-1 lead as Rachel Winters headed home her third goal of the season in the 61stminute.

Inside The Numbers
  • With the loss, the Bulls season comes to an end as they finished the season with a 7-9-3 overall record.
  • The Bowling Green Falcons held the 13-11 edge in shots while Buffalo held the 4-1 edge in corner kicks.
  • Carissima Cutrona netted her team-leading seventh goal of the season in the first half.
  • Julia Benati closed out her UB career with an assist on Carissima Cutrona's goal. She has now notched a career-high 18 points on the season. Over her last eight matches, Benati has notched four goals and 11 points.
  • Benati finishes her UB career ranking 12th in assists (13), 14th in points (49) and 15th in goals (18).
  • Julia Benati led all UB players with five shots, three on goal, while Kaitlyn Walsh and Carissima Cutrona each had two shots in the loss.
  • Senior goalkeeper Laura Dougall finished off her impressive UB career with one save in the loss.

Player of the MatchFollowing the match, the UB coaching staff selected Gurjeena Jandu as the Player of the Match after a strong defensive match against Bowling Green.
