Buff State softball tops Colby for first win, falls to Wisconsin-Stevens Point


CLERMONT, F.L. -- Buffalo State scored four runs in the final two innings to rally from an early deficit to defeat Colby 7-6 in eight innings before falling to Wisconsin-Stevens Point, 4 -1 in the second game in Clermont, Fla.

  • Nicole Adams (Lockport/Starpoint) was 3 for 4 with two RBIs to pace the Bengals offense and started the game on the mound, allowing five runs off of only four hits in 4 2/3 innings.
  • Danielle Szymkowiak (Cheektowaga/Cheektowaga) finished 2 for 4 from the plate including the walk-off single in the bottom of the eighth inning.
  • Cassie O'Hern (Augusta, NJ/High Point) and Hannah Dunlap (Batavia/Oakfield-Alabama) each went 2 for 3 from the dish with an RBI, while Dunlap scored twice for the Bengals.
  • Marissa Hayes (N. Tonawanda/Niagara-Wheatfield) was officially credited with the win, allowing one run on one hit in 3 1/3 innings of work.
  • Colby jumped out to an early 3-0 lead with two singles and a double in the top of the first inning.
  • Buffalo State responded with three runs of their own in the bottom of the third behind two sacrifice flies from Abijah Adams (Rochester/Greece-Arcadia) and Julia Blujus (Amherst/Sacred Heart).
  • The Mules scored twice in the top of fifth inning and once in the top of the sixth inning to take a 6-3 lead into the bottom of the seventh inning.
  • The Bengals started the seventh inning with four-straight singles to cut the deficit to 6-5 with no outs. Nicole Adams stepped up and stroked a single to left field that scored Dunlap to send the game into extra innings.
  • After Colby found themselves with a runner in scoring position, O'Hern caught a line drive and dove to tag out the runner for a double play to end the frame.
  • Buffalo State completed the comeback with a one out, game-winning single to left field by Szymkowiak to score Kaelee Lynch (Atwater, CA/Buhuch Colony) in the bottom of the eighth inning.
  • Paige Hartnett paced the Mules from the plate, going 2 for 3 with three runs scored and an RBI.
  • Wiley Holton picked up the loss on the hill for Colby, allowing seven runs on 12 hits in 7 1/3 innings.
  • The victory marks the first win for head coach Jamie Brown at her alma mater.

  • Blujus paced the Bengals' offense in the second game, going 2 for 3 from the plate with two stolen bases.
  • O'Hern and Dunlap each finished 1 for 4 from the plate with one double each.
  • Hayes picked up the loss on the hill for Buffalo State, allowing four runs on nine hits in seven innings of work.
  • After two innings of scoreless play, Wisconsin-Stevens Point's batters opened up the game with three runs on five hits in the top of the third inning that would prove to be the difference.
  • The Pointers tacked on a fourth run in the top of sixth inning to push the lead to 4-0.
  • Buffalo State threatened in the bottom of the seventh inning with a two-out double by O'Hern that scored Emily Frajdofer (Cheektowaga/JFK) to cut the lead to 4-1 but flied out on the next pitch to end the game.
  • Eight batters for Wisconsin-Stevens Point all recorded a hit, but Paige Allen led the way by going 2 for 4 with a run scored.
  • Ashley Cohen earned the win on the mound, allowing only one run on six hits in six innings of work. Anna Palicka pitched for one inning in relief.
Buffalo State will close out its stay in Florida tomorrow with two more games against Mount Saint Vincent and Williams at 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. respectively.
