Buff State softball plates 16 runs in two “Battle by the Lake” wins over Fredonia


BUFFALO -- Marissa Hayes (N. Tonawanda/Niagara-Wheatfield) scattered 10 hits in 12 innings pitched and three Buffalo State players belted home runs to pace the Bengals to a pair of wins, 7-5 and 9-1, in today's "Battle by the Lake" contest against SUNYAC rival Fredonia.

  • Buffalo State overcame a 5-1 deficit in the third inning the rally for the opening game victory.
  • Hayes went the distance in the circle allowing just five hits and two earned runs while striking out three.
  • Julia Blujus (Amherst/Sacred Heart) was 3 for 4 at the plate with two doubles and three runs scored.
  • Hannah Dunlap (Batavia/Oakfield-Alabama) finished 2 for 3 with a home run, a double, three RBIs and two runs scored.
  • Fredonia jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the second on a sloppy defensive inning by the Bengals.
  • The Blue Devils capitalized on two hits and another Bengal error in the third to push the lead to 5-1.
  • Buffalo State answered with two runs in the bottom of the third, and then after scoring on a plating a run early in the fourth, Dunlap pushed the Bengal in front with a two-run homer to left field.
  • The Bengals added an insurance run in the sixth on an RBI-single by Kaelee Lynch (Atwater, CA/Buhuch Colony) to help seal the victory.

  • Eva Fitzsimmons had a double and two RBIs for Fredonia as five different Blue Devils recorded one hit apiece.
  • Katie Yudin took the loss, allowing six runs on five hits in 3 2/3 innings.

  • Hayes continued her strong performance on the mound in the second game, giving up one run off of five hits for her second win of the day.
  • Abijah Adams (Rochester/Greece-Arcadia) went 3 for 3 from the plate including a three-run homer and two runs scored.
  • Cassie O'Hern (August, NJ/High Point) also finished 3 for 3 from the dish, tallying two RBIs and a run scored.
  • Dunlap continued to swing a hot bat, going 1 for 2 with an RBI and a run scored while Danielle Szymkowiak (Cheektowaga/Cheektowaga) was 2 for 3 from the dish with a homerun, an RBI and two runs scored.
  • Buffalo State opened the game by converting five hits into five runs in the bottom of the first inning to take an early 5-0 lead.
  • Fredonia took advantage of a pair of Bengal's errors in the top of the second to cut the deficit to 5-1 with its only run of the contest.
  • The Bengals extended its lead to 8-1 in the bottom of the second with a three-run homer to left center by Abijah Adams.
  • Buffalo State posted the victory with Szymkowiak's second home run of the season, to give themselves a 9-1 advantage in the bottom of the fifth.

  • Eva Fitzsimmons led the Blue Devils from the plate, going 1 for 2 with a run scored.
  • Sam Seeger was credited with the loss on the hill, allowing five runs off of four hits in 1/3 of an inning pitched.
  • Lauren Collorone and Katie Yudin each pitched in relief for Fredonia, going one inning and three innings respectively.


  • With the two victories, Buffalo State closed the deficit in the season-long "Battle by the Lake" competition to 17-11 with four points remaining (two each for men's and women's outdoor track and field).

Buffalo State will visit RIT tomorrow for a non-conference doubleheader on Wednesday at 3 p.m.
