Canisius softball splits doubleheader at Marist


The Canisius softball team closed out its first weekend of MAAC play on Sunday by earning a doublehear split at Marist. The Golden Griffins fell in the first game by a score of 7-5 before  shutting out the Red Foxes 5-0, in the nightcap. The split moves the Red Foxes to 15-21 overall and 2-2 in MAAC play, while the Griffs moved to 4-25 on the season, and 1-3 in conference action.

Marist's Ali Milam drove in a pair runs and junior pitcher Megan Beiermeister earned her eighth win in the circle as the host Red Foxes scored a 7-5 victory in the first game of the league doubleheader. Milam had a standout day, as she went 2-for-3, highlighted by a two-run homer.

Canisius trailed 3-0 after three innings before sophomore Morgan Altman hit a solo home run over the left field fence, her second for the season, in the fourth inning. Freshman Lindsi Dennis hit her first career homer in the fifth to tie the game at 4-4. Sophomore Chelsea Czapkowski added a single to score junior Denver Keller in the sixth to make the score 6-5.
Senior Erika Mackie took the loss in the circle for Canisius after she allowed seven runs, six earned, on eight hits. She also fanned three batters.

Czapkowski, Altman and Dennis each had two hits in the loss for Canisius. Keller also notched a hit for the Blue and Gold as well.

In the second game of the day, Canisius jumped out to an early 2-0 lead thanks to a home run by Keller and a sacrifice fly off the bat of Altman. The Griffs added to their lead in the fifth inning when freshman Kara Paradowski hit an RBI-double, scoring sophomore Ashley Barnett. Dennis tacked on an insurance run with an RBI-single in that frame as well.
In the sixth inning, Paradowksi singled to score junior Molly McGuire. Paradowski ended the day by going 2-for-3 with a run scored, while McGuire went 1-for-2 with an RBI and a walk.

Canisius freshman Emily Nicosia earned the win in the circle after she allowed just three hits in the contest.

• The doubleheader with Marist marked the 48th and 49th all-time meetings between the two schools. Canisius leads the series, 31-18.
• Dennis recorded her first home run for her college career, and went 3-for-7 with two RBIs on the day.   
• Paradowski and Keller each had a multi-hit game in the second contest.
• Saturday was the 112th career appearance in the circle for Mackie, which ranks fourth in school history.

The Griffs will return to conference play Saturday, April 14, when the team hosts Siena in its home opener. Game time is set for 12 p.m.
