Local SUNY Oswego students lend helping hands during Alternative Spring Break

OSWEGO -- Several area residents spent their 2018 spring break volunteering to help homeowners and provide human services in several communities around the nation through SUNY Oswego's Alternative Spring Break program.

Edna M. Gennarino-Lopez of Marwood Road in Rochester, a senior chemistry major, volunteered with Habitat for Humanity in Alabama helping build homes for deserving families in a rural low income area.

Shaylee C. Parsons of Stafford Way in Rochester, a senior public relations major, volunteered with Habitat for Humanity in Alabama helping build homes for deserving families in a rural low income area.

Emily G. Nasal of Bradigan Road in Forestville, a junior teaching English to speakers of other languages major, volunteered with Outreach 325 in Dominican Republic teaching English to youths during school and providing education enrichment activities for after school.

SUNY Oswego's Office of Community Services offers Oswego students a variety of opportunities to volunteer and travel during Alternative Breaks in winter and spring. Ranging from international to domestic to local trips, these breaks allow students to explore while volunteering.

Dozens of students volunteered in March at Habitat for Humanity in Alabama; Project Outreach in Dominican Republic; Operation Northern Comfort, Texas; American Hiking Society, Virginia; and ARISE, Meals on Wheels, Seneca Hill and other Oswego County organizations.

Admission to SUNY Oswego is competitive. U.S. News Media Group counts SUNY Oswego among the top public regional universities in the North for 2018, and the Princeton Review includes Oswego in its 2018 college guidebook "The Best Northeastern Colleges" and in its national list of "Green Colleges."

A 157-year-old comprehensive college in the State University of New York system, Oswego enrolls about 8,000 students in its College of Liberal Arts and Sciences; School of Business; School of Communication, Media and the Arts; and School of Education.
