UB women’s soccer closes out spring slate unbeaten

BUFFALO, N.Y. -- The University at Buffalo women's soccer team concluded their five-match spring season on Saturday night with an impressive 2-0 victory over Big 4 foe Canisius. With the win, the Bulls finished off their spring campaign with an unbeaten 5-0-0 record.
"This spring we were able to try a lot of new things, especially moving some players around into new positions," said head coach Shawn Burke. "Collectively we feel the girls adapted well and showed we have a lot of talent and versatility moving forward."
With an impactful senior class that included three starters graduating following the 2017 campaign, the youthful Bulls were able to shine in the spring season with many players seeing minutes in new positions on the field. The Buffalo defense proved to be much improved as they allowed just four goals across the five games while the offense was able to produce 14 goals including a pair of four-goal games.
Buffalo was able to open up their spring slate in impressive fashion as they netted four goals in a 4-1 victory over St. Bonaventure at Sahlen's Sports Park. The Bulls then backed that up with another four-goal outing against Vaughan Soccer Club as they earned the 4-2 win at UB Stadium.
The Bulls had a hard-fought 2-1 victory over the Niagara Purple Eagles at home on Sunday, April 8 before closing out their spring schedule with back-to-back cleansheets. UB claimed the 2-0 victory over the University of Rochester and wrapped up competition this weekend with a shutout of Canisius on Alumni Weekend at UB Stadium, 2-0.
After a strong spring, the Bulls will now head into the summer with some momentum as the team will return eight starters to a squad that won seven matches a season ago.
The Bulls will return eight of their top 10 scorers from a season ago as Carissima Cutrona comes back for her senior campaign after producing seven goals, four assists and 18 points while starting all 19 games. Gianna Yurchak will return for her second season in the blue and white after starting all 19 games and notching three goals, three assists and nine points while Hamburg native Kara Daly will look to improve on her sophomore campaign output of two goals and five assists in year three at Buffalo. Gurjeena Jandu and Marcy Barberic will also be back for the Bulls after having strong seasons defensively for the Bulls in 2017.
UB will also be welcoming a big freshman class of 10 student-athletes and Delaware transfer Sydney Gilmore to the squad for the fall campaign.
