UB women’s tennis to head to Northwestern for NCAA Tournament first round

UNIVERSITY AT BUFFALO ATHLETICS

BUFFALO, N.Y. -- The University at Buffalo women's tennis team will head to Evanston, IL for the opening rounds of the NCAA Tournament as the Bulls will face 14th seeded Northwestern in the first round, the NCAA announced on Tuesday during the NCAA Women's Tennis Selection Show.  The Bulls and Wildcats will square off on Friday, May 11 at 12pm central time.
Buffalo enters the NCAA Tournament tied for the second longest win streak in the nation at 14 matches, tied with Stanford and Denver.  Texas is the only team in the nation with a longer streak at 18.  The Bulls most recently won their second straight Mid-American Conference tournament title with a 4-2 victory over Miami (OH).  UB has dominated singles action over the last month as the Bulls have won 41 of their last 45 singles matches played over the previous eight matches.  Overall, the Bulls are 145-46 in singles heading into the NCAA Tournament.
After playing the #2 and #3 overall seeds, respectively, in their first two trips to the Big Dance, the Bulls will face a Northwestern squad that earned the #14 overall seed in this year's tournament.  The Wildcats are 21-5 this year, having fallen in the Big Ten title match to Michigan, 4-3. NU went undefeated in Big Ten play this season, posting a perfect 11-0 record to claim the outright regular-season title. Northwestern has won 18 of its last 20 matches.
Joining Buffalo and Northwestern in Evanston will be Kentucky and Kansas State, who will play their first round match following the conclusion of UB's.  The winners for each contest will face off with a trip to the Round of 16 on Saturday afternoon at Noon.
