URMC's 7th Annual 'Strollin' for the Colon' to benefit colon cancer research

STAFF REPORTS

ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- UR Medicine’s Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology will sponsor the 7th annual Strollin’ for the Colon 5K Walk/Run beginning at 10 a.m. on Saturday, May 19, at Geneseo Central School, 4050 Avon Rd., Geneseo.

Colon cancer—the second most common cause of cancer deaths in the U.S.—is preventable if detected at an early stage.

“Awareness of screening for this preventable disease is urgently needed in our region,” said 5K chair Tina Cottone, a gastroenterology nurse at UR Medicine’s Strong Memorial Hospital. “This event will help support colon cancer research at the Wilmot Cancer Institute, as well as cancer awareness programs through UR Medicine’s Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology, the Livingston County Cancer Services Program, and the Cancer Services Program of Monroe County.

Registration for the 5K is $25 per person in advance, $30 the day of the race, and includes chip timing and snacks before and after the race. Register by May 4 to get a free tee shirt. Entrants are invited to collect and submit additional donations.

The event will also feature a kids run that will follow the main race, gastroenterology specialists on hand to provide information and answer questions, food available to purchase, a silent auction and raffles from 8:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., and live music featuring the band Trilogy.
“Many of us have had family and friends who’ve had colon cancer,” said Cottone. “Working in the Gastroenterology Division, we appreciate the value and importance of education and screening and know first-hand that it can help save lives.
