NU's Eckerson signs with the Los Angeles Angels


ANAHEIM, Calif. – Niagara baseball pitcher Cody Eckerson has signed as a free agent with the Los Angeles Angels. This is the second straight year a Purple Eagle has been welcomed into the Angels' organization; pitcher Daniel Procopio was drafted by the Angels in the 10th round of the 2017 MLB Draft.

"I am so happy for Cody and his family," said Niagara baseball head coach Rob McCoy. "He has had an incredibly challenging road to get to this point. His work ethic and perseverance are unparalleled and he is living proof that if you want something bad enough and are willing to do whatever it takes to get it, it can become a reality. He has approached his career with the utmost professionalism and I expect that to help him succeed at the next level."

The lefty from Palmyra, N.Y. had a solid five seasons on the mound for the Purple and White. Eckerson finished the 2018 season with a record of 4-5. He led the Purple Eagle pitching staff with 87 strikeouts in 74.1 innings pitched and had an ERA of 4.84. Eckerson broke the Niagara baseball career strikeouts record against Marshall on March 9 and finished his career with 264 strikeouts.

Eckerson holds the Niagara baseball career records in games started (47), shutouts (five) and innings pitched (258.1). He is second in program history in career wins with 19 and has the fourth-best career ERA (3.87).

Eckerson's 87 strikeouts this season are the fourth-most in a single season in program history and he is tied for third in games started with 14 in 2018. Eckerson had the second-best single season ERA with a 2.29 in 2017 and also had the fifth most single season wins with six in 2017.
