Gillibrand to announce new legislation to combat maternal mortality rate in New York

PRESS RELEASE

Washington, D.C. -- With maternal mortality rates on the rise across New York State, U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand will hold a simultaneous satellite media availability and conference call to announce the Modernizing Obstetric Medicine Standards (MOMS) Act, new legislation that would help prevent women from experiencing complications or dying before, during, and after childbirth. Hospitals often lack the funding necessary for supplies and proper training to implement standards and prevent complications and deaths arising from childbirth. Gillibrand’s MOMS Act would provide funding to states and hospitals to develop and implement standardized, evidence-based best practices, in conjunction with the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), to help reduce maternal deaths.

New York State has one of the highest maternal mortality rates in the country, and over the past decade, the state has experienced a 60 percent increase in maternal mortality. According to the NYS Department of Health, the rate of maternal deaths has risen from 13.2 per 100,000 live births in 2006, to 25 per 100,000 live births in 2015. The maternal mortality rate is even higher for black women, who are three times more likely to die from complications arising during or after childbirth in New York State.
