Buffalo State women’s volleyball loses two to close out Bengal Challenge

BUFFALO, N.Y. -- Buffalo State wrapped up its two-day, six-team Bengal Challenge today in the Sports Arena and was unable to secure victory, dropping a pair of three-set matches to Geneva and eventual co-champion Case Western.
 
MATCH #1 BASICS
FINAL SCORE:  Geneva def. Buffalo State, 3-0 (27-25, 25-21, 25-16)
LOCATION: Sports Arena – Buffalo, N.Y.
RECORDS: Geneva (7-3), Buffalo State (3-9)
 
HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Buffalo State fell behind 9-3 in the first set, but rallied and led 20-17, only to fall 27-25. 
  • The Bengals never led in the second set, falling behind 18-10 before dropping the set by four. Geneva led wire-to-wire in the third set as well to pull away for the victory.
  • Alena McKelvey (Buffalo/City Honors) led the Bengals' offense with eight kills against just two errors and added a pair of aces.
  • Eimile O'Brien (Marietta/Marcellus) chipped in seven kills and two blocks, and Jordan McKenna(Tonawanda/Kenmore East) finished with five kills, three blocks and two aces.
  • Brooke Federko (Jamestown/Jamestown) recorded 16 assists, while Brittney Valentine(Marietta/Marcellus) totaled 17 digs.
 
FOR THE FOES

  • Sydney McNulty led a balanced Geneva attack with 10 kills and three aces.
  • Daphne Hunsinger added seven kills and 31 assists.

FINAL SCORE:  Case Western def. Buffalo State, 3-0 (25-17, 25-9, 25-11)

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Case Western took control early and never let up, cruising to a straight-set victory in the final match today.
  • Buffalo State continued to struggle to generate a consistent attack, finishing with just 19 kills and 22 attacking errors.
  • O'Brien led the Bengals with six kills.
  • Valentine finished with 14 digs, and Federko had 13 assists.
 
FOR THE FOES

  • Katie Kaminski led the Spartans with eight kills, and Anna Jaskoviak had 15 digs.
 
NOTEWORTHY

  • Case Western and the University of Rochester were named co-champions of the Bengal Challenge with both teams posting 3-0 records with nine set wins and one loss.
  • The all-tournament team was:  Clara Martinez (Rochester), Anna Jaskoviak (Case), Olivia Hale (Capital), Grace Lengauer (Allegheny), Brittany Valentine (Buffalo State), Sydney McNulty (Geneva).
