Canisius men’s soccer faces off against Michigan on Monday

CANISIUS COLLEGE ATHLETICS

BUFFALO, N.Y. -- The Canisius men's soccer team completes its Labor Day weekend road trip Monday with a 1 p.m. matinee against Michigan at the U-M Soccer Stadium in Ann Arbor, Mich.

Last Time Out
• Canisius used goals from sophomore Filippo Tamburini and freshman Jo Preci late in the second half to pull within one, but No. 5 Michigan State held on for a 3-2 victory Friday at DeMartin Stadium in East Lansing, Mich.
• Trailing 3-0 with 15 minutes to play, Tamburini and Preci scored a little more than four minutes apart to pull the Golden Griffins within one.
• Canisius nearly tied the game in the 83rd minute, but Morse turned aside Tamburini's attempt for the equalizer. That would be as close as the Griffs would get as MSU held Canisius without a shot on goal the rest of the way to ensure the victory.
• Michigan State posted a 13-8 shot advantage for the contest, but Canisius enjoyed a 6-5 edge in shots attempted during the second half. The Griffs were awarded four of the six corner kicks taken during the contest.
• The two goals scored by Canisius were the first two goals surrendered by the Spartans this season.
• Senior Bjarki Benediktsson recorded his second assist of the season and 13th of his Canisius career on Tamburini's second-half tally, moving him into a tie with Jay Joseph for eighth place on the program's career assists list.
• Freshman Bilel Bai made his collegiate debut and recorded an assist on Preci's marker in the 79th minute.

Scouting Michigan
• Picked fourth in the Big Ten preseason poll, Michigan enters Monday's matchup with a 2-1-0 overall record after posting a 3-0 victory against visiting UC Riverside on Friday.

• Three players – Umar Farouk Osman, Jack Hallahan and Robbie Mertz – have accounted for the other three Wolverine goals this season. Osman and Hallahan have also tallied one assist each, putting the duo in a tie for second place on the team's scoring chart.
• Henry Mashburn has started all three games in goal for the Maize and Blue, posting two shutouts, a 0.67 goals against average and a .717 save percentage in 270 minutes played thus far.
