Canisius hockey begins November at home versus AIC

The Canisius hockey team opens the month of November with an Atlantic Hockey Association series against AIC this weekend at KeyBank Rink at Harborcenter.
 
The Golden Griffins and Yellow Jackets open their two-game set Friday before completing the weekend set the following day. Puck drop for both contests is set for 7:35 p.m.
 
Faculty-Staff Night on Saturday
• Saturday's contest will serve as faculty-staff night for Canisius College, sponsored by the Buffalo Hyatt Regency.
• All faculty-staff are welcome to four complementary tickets to the game.
• Tickets can be picked at the Canisius human resources office Thursday and Friday between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m.
• Tickets will also be available at the Harborcenter ticket kiosk on Saturday starting at 6:30 p.m.
 
Scouting Canisius 
• The Griffs return their focus to conference play after opening the non-league portion of its 2018-19 slate last weekend at Clarkson.  
• After the first month of the season, senior Dylan McLaughlin (2g, 4a) and sophomore Grant Meyer (1g, 5a) are tied for the team scoring lead with six points each. Meyer is the only Canisius player to record a point in all five of the Griffs' games thus far.
• Senior Jimmy Mazza (2g, 3a) and junior Matt Stief (4a) have provided offensive punch from their blueline positions as the duo ranks third and tied for fourth on the team's scoring charts. Mazza has picked up a point in all four games he has played this season while Stief has recorded three of his four points while the Griffs have been on the power play.
• Junior Blake Weyrick and sophomore Tucker Weppner have split time in goal for the Griffs to open the season. Together, the duo has combined to post a .843 save percentage and a 4.20 goals against average.
• Canisius will look to get its power play on track as it is just 4-for-27 (.142) with the man advantage this season. The Griffs have recorded a power-play goal in all but one of its five games played this season.
 
Canisius Falls in Non-Conference Contest at Clarkson
• Canisius played its first non-league game last weekend as it suffered a 4-1 defeat at the hands of ECAC Hockey foe Clarkson.
• Josh Dunne scored two goals to lead Clarkson to victory in the front half of a home-and-home series between the two Empire State foes. 
• Mazza accounted for the lone Canisius tally, recording a power-play goal in the final two minutes of the second period.  
• The contest served as the seventh meeting between Canisius and Clarkson. The Golden Knights have won each of the last three meetings to build a 3-1-3 lead in the all-time series.
• Clarkson held a 22-16 shot advantage in the contest, highlighted by an 11-4 margin in the third period.
• Canisius was 1-for-6 on the power play while Clarkson was 0-for-3 with the man advantage.
• With his assist on Mazza's second-period tally, Meyer extended his season-long point streak to five games.
• Stief was also credited with an assist on Mazza's tally, giving him four assists on the season.
 
Scouting AIC
• The Yellow Jackets head into November looking to snap a winless streak that stands at three games following a home-and-home setback at the hands of nationally-ranked Quinnipiac last weekend.
• Blake Christensen has paced a balanced AIC attack in the early going, tallying four goal and three assists for a team-high seven points.
• Shawn McBride ranks second on the squad in scoring with six points thanks to a team-high five assists.
• in goal, Stefano Durante and Zackarias Skog have split time between the pipes, combining for an .833 save percentage and a.4.06 goals against average in 428 minutes of work.
 
Canisius-AIC Series Notes 
• In a series that dates back to the 1992 season, the Griffs hold a 39-17-7 all-time record against the Yellow Jackets, including a 39-16-7 edge in Division I meetings.
• Canisius has more victories against AIC than any other school at the Division I level.
• The Griffs have especially dominated the series as of late as Canisius is 22-4-5 in its last 31 games against AIC, dating back to the start of the 2008-09 season.
• Canisius is 9-2-4 in its last 15 home contests against AIC, with both home setbacks to the Yellow Jackets coming during the 2017-18 season. The teams split their lone regular-season series at HARBORCENTER last January (AIC, 3-0; CC, 6-1) before the Griffs claimed their AHA Tournament quarterfinal round series in three games in March (CC, 8-1; AIC, 2-1 (ot); CC, 3-0).
