Niagara men’s tennis goes 2-1 in weekend matches


The Niagara Purple Eagles defeated Mount St. Mary's (Md.) and Mercyhurst to win their last two matches of their western Pennsylvania road trip.

St. Francis (Pa.) 7, Niagara University 0

Niagara lost the doubles point. Playing without its No. 1 singles player (Felipe Fuentes), the entire lineup played a spot higher. The Purple Eagles were defeated in all six singles matches.

Niagara University 4, Mount St. Mary's 3

The Purple Eagles won four of the six singles matches to pull out the win. NU trailed, 1-0, after losing the doubles point. Niagara's no. 1 team of Taylan Ozdemir and Francis Nadeau won their match. Niagara's two through five players earned wins. Ozdemir won in straight sets in No. 2 singles; Nadeau defeated Louis Tonon in straight sets in three singles. Josh Wilson and Brent Boleslav each won in three sets in four and five singles, respectively.

Niagara 5, Mercyhurst 4

Playing under NCAA Division II rules, Niagara edged Merychurst. The Purple Eagles won two of the three doubles matches to take a 2-1 lead into singles. The No. 2 team of Francis Nadeau and Brent Boleslav won 8-4, and the No. 3 team of Jason Wisely and Lukas Wenninger, 8-5. NU's top three singles players earned wins – Taylan Ozdemir, Felipe Fuentes and Francis Nadeau.
