Canisius women's soccer defeats Cleveland State, 1-0

BUFFALO, N.Y. -- Canisius junior Madeline Beaulieu scored her fourth goal of the season in the 41st minute to help lead the Blue and Gold to a 1-0 win over Cleveland State Sunday afternoon at the Demske Sports Complex in Buffalo, N.Y.
With the win, the Golden Griffins improve to 3-2-1 on the season. The Vikings fell to 4-4-0 with the loss.
Beaulieu put the Griffs on the board in the 41st minute after she headed a corner kick from from sophomoreMagdalen Canitia. Beaulieu's goal, her second in as many games for Canisius, stands as the sixth of her career, while the assist for Canitia marks her first point of the 2018 season.  
Canisius junior goalkeeper Alana Rossi was credited with one save en route to her second shutout of the 2018 campaign. Cleveland State keeper Stevie Holbrook made two saves for the Vikings before she was replaced by Kendra Clarke in the second half. Clarke was credited with one save in the losing effort.

The Vikings out shot the Griffs, 9-5, but Canisius held a 4-1 advantage in shots on goal. Cleveland State also held a 6-2 advantage in corner kicks for the contest.

I think it's a good way to start our preparation for conference play. To come off a tough loss to a good school and bounce back to win against another good team feels great. We enjoy being able to defend our own turf in front of our fans."
Game Notes
• This was the 11th all-time meeting between the two schools, with Canisius trailing in the series 6-5-0.
• These two schools have now played in seven straight seasons, with the Vikings winning five of the last seven contests.
• Sunday's win over Cleveland State is Canisius' first in the series since the 2012 campaign, where the Blue and Gold scored a 3-0 victory.
• The win on Sunday also gives Canisius a winning record (3-2-1) in non-league play for the second-straight season.

Up Next
Canisius will open up MAAC play on the road at Saint Peter's Sept. 15. Kickoff in Jersey City, N.J., is set for noon. The Griffs return home Sept. 22, when the team plays host to Manhattan. That game, which will be broadcast live on ESPN+, will start at 1 p.m.
