Canisius women's basketball defeated by UT Rio Grande Valley

Canisius senior Sara Hinriksdottir recorded her second-straight double-double with 13 points and a career-high 15 rebounds. However, it wasn't enough for the Golden Griffins as they fell at home to UT Rio Grande Valley by a score of, 57-53.
Junior Shannon Conely was Canisius' leading scorer with 14 points on 3-of-8 shooting and going 8-of-10 from the charity stripe. Conely also added a career-high seven rebounds in the game. In her first start of the season, senior Amanda Schiefen grabbed eight boards and recorded two assists in the losing effort. As a team, the Griffs out-rebounded the Vaqueros, 51-32, 15 of which were offensive rebounds, creating 13 second chance points. From the field, Canisius shot 32.1percent (18-56) , 26.3 percent (5-19) from 3-point range and shot 60.0 percent (12-20) at the line.
For UTRGV (2-2), senior Idil Turk recorded a game-high 19 points, making half of the 3-pointers that she attempted.  Senior Quynne Huggins added 10 points on 4-of-8 shooting, while also collecting four rebounds for the Vaqueros. As a team, UT Rio Grande Valley shot 34.5 percent from the floor on a 19-of-55 clip and 42.1 percent from deep, making 8-of-19 shots.
Canisius came out hot to start the game, going on a 14-2 run, highlighted by a deep three from senior Maria Welch. After the media timeout, UTRGV went on an 8-0 run of their own to pull the game within four, at 14-10. A pair of 3-pointers from Welch and junior D'Jhai Patterson-Ricks put the Blue and Gold up, 19-13, after ten minutes of play. In the second, Canisius would hold a lead until the 4:27 mark when senior Krisynthia Sampson tied the game after making a layup in the lane and drawing the foul to add one from the line. Canisius would retake the lead one other time in the game when Hinriksdottir made a 3-pointer with 7:36 left in the third, making the score, 37-35.
With 8:32 left in the fourth and final frame, Canisius would tie it on a three at the top of the key by sophomoreAnndea Zeigler, however, Rio Grande Valley would answer with a 7-0 run capped off by junior Makaela Mosely's made jump shot. From there, Canisius would get within two points when Welch made her second deep ball of the game and make the score, 52-50. The Vaqueros would out-score the Griffs in the final three minutes, 5-3, to earn the victory, 57-54.
Head Coach Scott Hemer's Postgame Comment
"Today was disappointing, I don't think we came out with the same attention to detail as we did in the first two games. We lacked passion for things we could control, except rebounding, that was one thing we did do well. The hard part about it being we only allowed them to score 57 points. Now, they can choose to learn from it so it doesn't happen again."
Game Notes
• Saturday afternoon's matchup was the second meeting between the two schools, UTRGV now leads, 2-0.
• Hinriksdottir recorded a double-double for the second-consecutive game, becoming the first Golden Griffin to do so since Marie Warner in 2009. She also grabbed a career-high 15 rebounds.
• In her first start since the 2016-17 season, senior forward Amanda Schiefen snagged a career-high eight boards. The Horseheads, N.Y., native also matched her career-high with 28 minutes played.
