UB soccer's Carissima Cutrona earns First Team Google Cloud Academic All-District honors


BUFFALO, N.Y. -- University at Buffalo women's soccer senior team captain Carissima Cutrona was honored for her work off the pitch on Thursday afternoon as she earned a spot on the Google Cloud Academic All-District First Team, as announced by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). 
"There is no one more deserving than Carissima for this award," said head coach Shawn Burke. "A tireless worker on the field, in the classroom and most importantly as a leader of this team. Her hard work, sacrifice and dedication has put her is this position to be recognized on a national stage and all of it is well deserved."
This marks the second straight season that Cutrona earned the honor and she is just the fifth player in school history to earn the academic accolade.
Cutrona, a psychology major with a 3.91 GPA, was enjoying the best season of her career before sustaining a season-ending injury against Eastern Michigan in the 11th match of the season. Prior to the injury, Cutrona was the only player in the nation with at least eight goals and eight assists. The senior closed out her senior campaign with a team-high eight goals, eight assists and 24 points including three game-winning goals while being named First Team All-MAC for the first time in her UB career. She netted at least one point in her final 10 matches of the season while setting a career-high with eight helpers.
For her impactful UB career, the Williamsville native ranks fifth in career assists (18), sixth in goals (28) and sixth in points (74).
The Bulls closed out their 2018 season with an 11-8-0 overall record and a 5-7-0 MAC mark while advancing to the MAC tournament for the fifth straight season. Prior to Cutrona's season-ending injury, the Bulls had a 9-2-0 overall record and a 3-1-0 MAC mark.
